Morrisville and the Battle of Gettysburg

Yesterday, evening, I attended, along with my father, the Ernest Dollar lecture, on the Battle of Gettysburg.

As a member of the Town Council, I was very proud of this event, and thank Shannon and Ben for putting this event together.

Ernest provided an insightful lecture on the Morrisville soldiers, who fought in the Civil War, along with sharing his experiences, re enacting the Battle as the 6th North Carolina infantry.   This lecture was yet another example of the value of our Morrsiville history and the importance our historic preservation efforts can continue to play in providing our Town our own unique identity.    Ernest also, through his experience, learned that he had family fight in the Civil War.

For me, the most moving part of the lecture was Ernest reminding each of us the final words from President Lincoln, in his address, “That from these honored dead, we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave their last full measure of devotion, that these dead shall not have did in vain, and this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that a government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall never perish from the Earth.”

For our elected leaders, I remind each of them that a House Divided Cannot Stand and that we always think of the needs of our country, our citzens, before politically expedient decisions.

The enduring promise of out great nation, freedom and liberty, must always be what we strive to provide our citizens, one nation, under god, indivisible with Liberty and Justice for all.
