After months of anticipation, it is official. Google has announced its plans to bring Google Fiber to our area. Google Fiber promises to provide speeds up to 1,000 megabytes per second, or 100 times faster than today’s average broadband connection. This service is provided in just a few areas in the world, and today only four new locations are being announced: Atlanta, Charlotte, the Triangle, and Nashville.
Having Morrisville chosen as a Google Fiber city places our community among the most advanced in the country. The faster service provides another selling point as we work to recruit new business to the area. As a result, we expect innovation like never before as we reap the benefits of this game-changing event for our economic development efforts to attract a tech savvy workforce to Morrisville, foster entrepreneurship and innovation, and enhance quality of life for our citizens and businesses in the region.
At the Press Conference held at the National Museum of History, it was great to see Mayor Stohlman there with the Mayors of Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Carborro, Cary, and Garner. Special thanks to Raleigh CIO, Gale Roper, and Mayor McFarlane of the City of Raleigh for leading these efforts.
In his remarks, the Governor mentioned that the Google Fiber announcement will enable us to continue to execute our vision of being a part of the National Innovation Triangle: Silicon Valley, Boston, and North Carolina! I look forward to achieving that goal.
